France : The Mont Saint Michel

Mont Saint-Michel, in Normandy, is one of the most popular tourist and pilgrimage destinations in the world.
It has developed an international reputation, as much for its spiritual and symbolic force, as for its historical and architectural importance.
The monument, is an exceptional example of medieval art, connecting earth and sky, man and nature.
The powerful tides in the area (more than 10 metres) mean that much of the bay is above water at low tide.
Almost all of the surface area of the Rock is taken up by the Abbey of Mont Saint Michel and its estate.
The cloisters are not in the centre of the monastery, as would traditionally be the case ,and are not directly accessible from all sides of the building.
In this case, the function of the cloisters is purely spiritual : to facilitate the meditation of the monks.
Surprisingly, three of the arches of the cloisters look out over the vast emptiness of the ocean.
This was probably designed to be the entry point to the Chapter House that was never built.
The cloisters contain a medieval garden centred around a rectangular boxwood motif, surrounded by thirteen Damas rosebushes.
