Hayat nació en Mogadiscio (Somalia) en 1989, pero tuvo que huir de su país cuando todavía no había cumplido los dos años por el inicio del conflicto armado que dura hasta hoy. En su huída pasó por Dadaab (Kenia), el que hoy es el campo de refugiados más grande del mundo, y vivió en Kenia y Tanzania. Hace 12 años el destino le llevó a España y desde allí ha seguido con tristeza las distintas fases de la interminable guerra somalí.
Más de 20 años después, Hayat se prepara para conocer una región del norte de la antigua Somalia de la que su madre siempre le cuenta historias familiares: Somaliland. Aunque no disfruta de reconocimiento internacional como país, declaró su independencia del resto de Somalia en 1991, al inicio de la guerra. Desde entonces, ha conseguido resurgir de sus cenizas, construir un Estado con instituciones políticas propias, un presidente elegido democráticamente (en elecciones monitoreadas por observadores internacionales) e incluso moneda propia.
El documental es la narración del viaje emocional de Hayat, ilusionada por cumplir el sueño de reencontrarse con sus orígenes. Desde el embarque en el avión hacia lo desconocido, Hayat piensa sobre su vida en España y sobre cómo hubiera sido su historia personal si hubiera crecido en África. El choque cultural enorme -la situación de la mujer, el velo que apenas sabe colocarse o ignorar el idioma somalí a pesar de pertenecer étnicamente a esa comunidad- hará de su travesía un viaje interior lleno de aprendizajes y de descubrimientos.
Hayat was born in Mogadishu (Somalia) in 1989 but had to flee from the country before she was two years old to avoid the armed conflict that is still going on today. More than 20 years later, Hayat prepares herself to travel to a northern region of ancient Somalia, of which her mother has always told her family stories: Somaliland. Although it is not recognized throughout the international community as a sovereign country, Somaliland declared independence from Somalia in 1991, at the beginning of the war. From then on, it has resurged from the ashes, to construct a state with its own political institutions, currency, and a democratically elected president.
The documentary tells the story of Hayat’s exciting and emotional journey to discover Somaliland. From the moment she boards the plane and travels into the unknown, Hayat is considering her life in Spain and contemplating how different it would have been had she grown up in Africa. This huge culture shock — the status of women, the veil that she does not know how to wear correctly, the Somali language that is completely unknown to her, despite the fact that, ethnically speaking, she belongs to this community, all make her journey a way to better understand where she comes from.

Plus de 20 ans plus tard Hayat se prepare à voyager dans la region Nord de l’ancienne Somalie, dont sa mère lui a raconté des histoires de familles : Somaliland. Bien qu’il ne soit pas reconnu par la communauté internationale comme un pays souverain, Somaliland a déclaré son indépendance en 1991, au début de la guerre. Depuis il a ressurgi de ses cendres pour construire un état avec ses propres institutions politiques, sa monnaie et un president élu démocratiquement.
Ce documentaire raconte le voyage excitant et émouvant d’Hayat pour découvrir Somaliland. Du moment où elle embarque en avion et voyage dans l’inconnu, Hayat considère sa vie en Espagne et s’imagine combine elle aurait été différente si elle avait grandi en Afrique. Cet immense choc des cultures – le statut des femmes, le voile qu’elle ne sait pas comment porter correctement,la langue de Somalie qui lui est complètement inconnue, malgré le fait que d’un point de vue éthique elle appartient à cette communauté, tout celà fait de son voyage une manière de mieux comprendre d’où elle vient.
