Un épisode romancé des règnes de la reine Victoria et du roi Edouard VII, qui virent naître l'Entente cordiale entre l'Angleterre et la France. Le film visait à rapprocher la France et la Grande-Bretagne alors que l'Allemagne hitlérienne menaçait.
Tiré d'un sujet d'André Maurois, son film relate les quelques années précédant l'acte officiel et veut témoigner qu'en dépit de la rivalité ancestrale et des incompréhensions qui demeurent entre les deux pays, des divergences d'intérêt et des incidents diplomatiques, tel que l'épisode colonial fameux de Fachoda, l'amitié franco-anglaise est réelle autant qu'utile. Autour du roi Edouard VII, personnage central du récit, francophile et spirituel, gravitent quelques personnages historiques superficiellement et brièvement ébauchés
Entente Cordiale was the third in Marcel L'Herbier's series of "Chroniques filmées" (following La Tragédie impériale and Adrienne Lecouvreur, both in 1938) in which he dramatised historical subjects in a manner "very close to reality", albeit reluctantly combined with some romantic fiction.
The film depicts the 1904 signing of the Entente Cordiale creating an alliance between Britain and France and ending their historic rivalry.
It was based on the book Life of Edward VII by André Maurois. It was made with an eye to its propaganda value, as the Second World War had broken out and Britain and France were allies fighting against Nazi Germany.
