Wilson, inspecteur de police charge de retrouver les criminels de guerre allemands, fait relâcher Meinike, ancien chef d'un camp d'extermination, et le surveille jusqu'a Harper, village américain ou l'Allemand retrouve son ancien supérieur, Franz Kindler. Franz, vivant sous le nom de Charles Rankin, est devenu un honorable professeur de collège et épouse Mary, fille du respectable juge Longstreet. Pour éviter les indiscrétions de Meinike, Charles le supprime. Wilson mène l'enquête...
Just after Second World War, Conrad Meinike comes out of jail, but is being followed by inspector Wilson. Meinike is visiting several shady people asking for the address of Franz Kindler. He is given a postcard featuring the square of a small town called Harper, in the Connecticut. Kindler new name is now Charles Rankin. He is a teacher, leads a quiet life and about to marry Mary, the daughter of Judge Longstreet. His favorite hobby : fix the church clock. Meinike just arrived in Harper realizes that Wilson is after him. He manages to escape from Wilson for a while and meets Kindler/Rankin. This one in order not to be identified strangulates him and hides the body in the woods. That same day, Charles and Mary Longstreet get married and go on their wedding trip. Wilson acting as an antique dealer becomes friendly with the Longstreet family. When the couple returns from their trip, Wilson is convinced that Rankin is an old war criminal, a Nazi. Wilson belongs to allied commission in charge of bring war criminals to trial. Mary cannot believe it and soon Charles tries to get rid of her…
