Whatever Lola Wants
Lola, 25 ans, vit à New York où elle travaille pour la poste en rêvant d’une carrière de danseuse. Youssef, son meilleur ami, est un jeune Egyptien gay installé à New York pour y vivre comme il l’entend. C’est par lui que Lola découvre l’histoire d’Ismahan, star de la danse orientale, véritable légende au Caire.
Dans le restaurant où Youssef travaille, Lola rencontre un autre Egyptien, Zack, et en tombe amoureuse. L’idylle tourne rapidement court quand Zack prend conscience des différences culturelles qui les séparent et rentre en Egypte. Sans réfléchir, Lola, aussi impulsive que naïve, décide immédiatement de le rejoindre. Arrivée au Caire, déçue par l’accueil de la famille de Zack autant que par l’attitude du jeune homme, Lola se met en tête de retrouver la fascinante danseuse Ismahan.
Lola’s dream is to move to Egypt to be an oriental dancer, although she has never taken lessons before. Of course, she hesitates leaving a stable job, but encouraged by an attractive Arab man, she quits her job and flies to Cairo. There, she learns about a dancer, Ismahan, and manages to get dance lessons. In no time she becomes a professional level dancer. A famous impresario, Nasser Radi, takes her under his wing, and she gets to dance at the prestigious Nile Tower - from there, her career takes off and she becomes a star. She realizes, however, that the impresario, was her teacher's mysterious lover - the two being kept apart from pride and social conventions. Lola goes back to New York to take the art she loves to her fellow Americans, as the older couple finally reunite.
