André Jurieu est un aviateur qui vient de traverser l'Atlantique en solitaire pour conquérir le coeur de Christine, son amour éternel, qui a épousé le marquis de Chesnay, un aristocrate parisien.
Celle-ci se montrant indifférente à l'exploit, Durieu tente alors de se suicider. Son ami Octave le fait alors inviter chez Christine et son riche époux pour une partie de chasse en Sologne... Ce « drame gai » ou « fantaisie dramatique », pour reprendre l'expression du réalisateur, a pour ambition d'être une peinture de moeurs de l'aristocratie et de la grande bourgeoisie ainsi que des domestiques qui les servent, à la fin des années 1930. Jean Renoir porte sur le fonctionnement de cette société un regard hautement critique mais aussi résolument humaniste. Aujourd'hui, ce film est très largement considéré par les professionnels du cinéma non seulement comme le meilleur film de Renoir mais encore comme un des plus grands jamais réalisés. La Règle du jeu est un des films les plus commentés de l'histoire. Il a influencé un nombre très important de scénaristes, de réalisateurs Selon François Truffaut, La Règle du jeu constitue « le credo des cinéphiles, le film des films ».
Two aimless thugs steal the passerby's handbags and assault women. They take whatever the bourgeois characters value : whether their cars, peace of mind, or daughters. Marie-Ange , a jaded, passive hairdresser, joins them as lover cook, and mother confessor. She's on her own search for seemingly unattainable sexual pleasure. The film was initially judged to be too gloomy and was greeted with derision by a Parisian crowd on its premiere. The French government duly banned it, but after the war it has come to be seen as one of the greatest films of all-time. On the surface, a series of interlinked romantic intrigues taking place at a weekend shooting party in a country chateau, the film is in fact a study in the corruption and decay of French society on the eve of the outbreak of World War II. Now hailed as a masterpiece, Renoir's brilliant social comedy is widely recognized as one of the greatest films ever made. It appeared in both the Sight and Sound Critics' Top Ten and Directors' Top Ten Polls of 2002.
