Alger, février 1903 : verdict du procès de Marguerite, village algérien où, au cours d’une révolte, sept Européens ont été tués. Au long d’un récit à rebours, on apprend les raisons qui ont amené Eugénia, fille de riches colons espagnols, à se suicider malgré la passion qui la lie à son mari, Jean Corveler, avocat des insurgés, et combien son destin individuel et celui de l’Algérie coloniale sont intimement liés.
