Selon la légende, c’est à Chypre « L’Île des Amours » qu’est née Aphrodite.
Elle témoigne d’une histoire riche et variée, où se côtoient monastères orthodoxes, églises byzantines et vestiges grecs ou romains.
Limassol est la principale ville et port de la côte sud. Le port est devenu le plus important de l’ile depuis l’abandon de celui de Famagouste situé en zone occupée.
Le site antique de Kourion est le plus spectaculaire de l'île. Du haut de sa falaise, le théâtre ouvert sur la mer, est très bien conservé, de même que les mosaïques de la villa romaine voisine.
Larnaca est une cité très vivante, avec son ancien quartier turc et la belle promenade du front de mer, où le soir venu, toute la ville déambule en famille.
L'église de Kiti aux portes de Larnaca fut agrandie par les Francs. Elle en porte encore la marque ; à l'intérieur, une splendide mosaïque remonte probablement au 6ème siècle.
Asinou:Une église au cœur d'un splendide paysage abrite le cycle de peintures byzantines le plus complet de l'île.
À ce titre, elle figure au Patrimoine mondial de l'Unesco.
Non loin Omodos.L'un des plus pittoresques villages de la montagne avec son vieux monastère et ses petites ruelles.
Legend has it that Aphrodite was born on Cyprus, « The Island of Love ». The island is scattered with monuments that give evidence to its rich and varied history, orthodox monasteries stand beside byzantine churches, and Greek and Roman relics.
Limassol is the main town and Port on the South side of the island.
The port here has taken over as Cyprus’ principal port since Famagouste was abandoned it lies within the occupied zone.
One of the most spectacular places on the island is the ancient site of Kourion.. Perched on the top of a set of waterfalls, looking out over the sea, the theatre is very well conserved, as are the mosaics of the neighbouring Roman villa.
Larnaca is a very lively city, with its old Turkish quarter, and the beautiful seafront promenade, where the whole town comes out to stroll in the early evening.
The church of Kiti, at the edge of Larnaca, was enlarged by the Franks, as can be clearly seen today. The splendid mosaic inside the church probably dates back to the 6th century.
Built in an exquisite natural setting, the church of Asinou houses the most complete set of Byzantine paintings to be found on the island, and has been recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage site.
Not far from here is Omodos, one of the most picturesque mountain villages, with its old monastery and charming little streets.
