La Tour Eiffel a accueilli depuis sa création près de 250 millions de visiteurs, devenant le premier monument payant visité au monde avec plus de 7 millions de touristes par an.
D’une hauteur de 300 mètres (1000 pieds), elle fut érigée par Gustave Eiffel pour l’Exposition universelle de 1889.
Il s’agissait pour l’époque de montrer aux autres nations les grandes évolutions scientifiques et technologiques que connaissait la France.
Pendant plus de quarante ans, elle est restée la plus haute tour de la planète.
Symbole de Paris et de la France, elle est incontournable, et c’est à la rencontre de tous ceux qui y travaillent et qui veillent sur elle, que nous la découvrons avec des yeux admiratifs.
Des historiens nous rappelleront les étapes de sa construction, les faits marquants sur son fondateur Gustave Eiffel, ses premiers utilisateurs avec le télégraphe, puis la radio et enfin la télévision ( elle abrite aujourd’hui plus de 200 antennes qui desservent toute la région parisienne).
Ses deux restaurants, dont le restaurant gastronomique « Le Jules Verne »allient la grande cuisine Française et la vue sur Paris.
Les sous-sols des piliers abritent la machinerie d’origine, imaginée par Gustave Eiffel, il y a plus de 120 ans pour actionner les ascenseurs.
Les illuminations habillent chaque soir les structures de la Tour, et depuis quelques années toutes les heures pendant cinq minutes l’édifice scintille grâce à 20 000 lampes.
The Eiffel Tower has been visited by more than 250 million people since its construction, making it the first ever paying monument in the world to receive more that 7 million visitors per year.
It stands at a height of 300 metres (1000 feet), and was designed by Gustave Eiffel for the Universal Exhibition in 1889.
At the time, its purpose was to demonstrate to other nations the great scientific and technological developments being made in France.
For more than forty years, it remained the highest tower on the planet.
It is the unmistakable symbol of Paris and of France. We set not only to marvel at it, but also to discover the history of the tower by talking to the people who work and watch over it on a daily basis.
Historians take us through the different stages of the tower’s construction, the highlights of the life of its creator, Gustave Eiffel, and it’s initial uses, for telegraph, radio and eventually television distribution (it supports more than 200 antennas which broadcast throughout the Parisian region).
The two restaurants in the tower, including the gourmet restaurant « Le Jules Verne », combine fine food with incredible views over Paris.
In the basement level under each of the pillars is the original machinery for the lifts, designed by Gustave Eiffel more than 120 years ago.
Every night, the structure of the tower comes alight and, for several years now, for five minutes every hour, the 20 000 bulbs flash, so that the whole tower glimmers with sparkling lights.
