André DERAIN
André DERAIN est l’un des fondateurs du fauvisme.
Le peintre fit sa période de formation de 1898 à 1899 à l'Académie Camillo et étudia avec Eugène Carrière.
Dans cette académie, il se lie d’amitié avec Henri Matisse qu’il rencontre en copiant des tableaux au musée du Louvre.
Il visite les premières expositions de Van Gogh et expose ses premières toiles au salon d'automne.
Il va être également influencé par Cézanne.
Il rejoint Matisse à Collioure en 1905 et définit le style qui le fera connaître du grand public : couleurs vives, dessin simplifié, composition claire.
Il est alors considéré comme un des meilleurs représentants du fauvisme.
Après 1906, il semble influencé par Gauguin, et les arts primitifs océaniens, ses couleurs deviennent moins vives.
Sa réputation grandit lorsqu'il reçut le Prix Carnegie en 1928 et commença à exposer dans le monde entier : Londres, Berlin, Francfort, Düsseldorf et New- York.
L'œuvre de Derain est essentiellement picturale mais il est très connu comme sculpteur.
Il a également signé de nombreux décors et costumes pour des ballets prestigieux, et illustré une trentaine de livres.
André DERAIN was a great French painter , and one of the founders of Fauvism.
He studied from 1898 to 1899 at the Académie Camillo and was taught by Eugene Carrière.
It was at the academy that he made friends with Henri Matisse, the two met when they were copying paintings at the Louvre museum.
He attended Van Gogh’s first exhibitions, and exhibited his first paintings at the Salon d’Automne.
He joined Matisse in Collioure in 1905, and there developed the style for which he would become famous: bright colours, simple lines, clear composition.
He became known as one of the primary representatives of Fauvism.
After 1906, he appears to have been influenced by Gaughin, his colours became more sombre.
His reputation soared to new levels when he received the Carnegie Prize in 1928 and he exhibited his work around the world: London, Berlin, Frankfurt, Dusseldorf, and New York.
Derain’s work is primarily pictorial but he also created the decors, and ballets, illustrated about thirty books, as well as
being recognised as an accomplished sculptor.
