Le National Gallery est le musée national d'art le plus important de Grande Bretagne.
Le musée est installé dans l'ancienne demeure du peintre Argestein. Fondée en 1824, les premières possessions du musée furent modestes : seulement 36 peintures.
Une grande partie des oeuvres furent offertes aux musées par des donnateurs.
Elle détient maintenant un patrimoine artistique principalement composé d'oeuvres datant de 1250 à 1900 et conserve quelques uns des plus beaux tableaux du monde.
Toutes les écoles européennes y sont représentées, des primitifs à l'impressionnisme.
Se scollections se montent aujourd'hui à environ 2 300 peintures.
Il propose des oeuvres des maitres européens du XIIe au XIXe siècle comme "La Vénus et Mars" de Boricelli, la "Vierge aux rochers" de Léonard De Vinci, "Samson et Dalila" ed Rubens, "La charette de foin" de Constable, "Les tournesols" de Van Gogh.
Les peintures du 17e siècle provenant de Flabndres, d'Espagne et des pays-Bas abritent des oeuvres de maitres tels que El Greco, Goya, Murillo, Velasquez, Mabuse, Matsys, Teniers, Bosh, Van Goyen, Hals, vermeer, Rembrandt, Brueghel, Campin, Zubaran, Van Dyck, Van Eyck, Rubens, Memling, Dürer, Friedrich, Hoblein, Cranach, Poussin, Le Lorrain...
ON peut y voir des peintres français comme Watteau, Delacroix, Boucher, Charidn, Champaigne, Fragonard, Géricault, Rousseau, Lorrain...
Beaucoup de peintres de l'école italienne sont représentés : Fra Angelico, Bassano, Bellini, Bellotto, Bernini, Bronzino, Canaletto, Corregio, Crivelli, Daddi, Domenichino, Giordano, di Bondone, Guardi, Guernico, Leonard de Vinci, Longhi, Lotto, Mantegna, Michel-Ange, Moroni, Palma, le Pérugin, Raphaël, Reni, Ricci, Sarto, Strozzi, le Tintoret...
Parmi les peintres anglais on retrouve également Gainsborough, Constable, Hogarth, Hoppner, Lawrence, Reynodls, Strubbs...
On peut voir des oeuvres impressionnistes avec des tableaux de Seurat, Corot, Goya, Pissarro, Piocasso, Sisley, Monet, Manet, Cézanne, Degas, Vuillard, Courbet, Ingres, Turner, Renoir, Van Gogh, Russel, Derain, Matisse, Bellows, Andersen, Streeton...
